This Is Our Story

(and we're sticking to it!)

The Very Beginning

In September of 2003, Jane joined Generations Incorporated as an AmeriCorps member. Tom was intrigued by her early on, but as he was a staff member, made no "moves". He patiently waited until Jane's year was over. However, at that point, she threw a wrench into the plan by applying for and being hired as a staff member to stay on with Generations Incorporated. Tom decided to go ahead and get to know her a bit better, which she greatly welcomed, thinking of him as such a wonderful co-worker.

The First "Date"

On August 21, 2004, Jane and Tom had made plans to go hiking together. He decided that prior to this, he needed to let his intentions be known and wrote Jane a card expressing his feelings. While Jane was surprised, she was also worried about the whole dating someone at work thing. They decided to go for a walk on the grounds of the DeCordova museum, and they clicked. That date led to actual official dates. When they found out that Tom's parents also went there on one of their first dates, it seemed to be more than a coincidence.

From Secret...

They kept it a secret from everyone at work for a good while. Though they agreed not to lie, Jane actually told some "mis-information" to one of her co-workers.

...To Coming Out!

Eventually they decided that this was "real" and they wanted to tell their Executive Director. Having practiced and reviewed the plan numerous times, the moment finally came. While the delivery wasn't as smooth as desired, once she realized what Jane and Tom were trying to say, she was very excited! Now they didn't have to share "mis-information" with co-workers.

The Proposal

In November, Jane and Tom went to her home-country, the Netherlands, for a vacation. On November fourth, Tom asked Jane to marry him. She said "are you really asking me?????" Instead of answering her, he pulled out the substitute ring and she said "oh my God" about 57 times. She remembered to say "yes" and the next day they picked a gorgeous engagement ring at the same jewelry store where Jane's grandparents bought their jewelry (which they found out later!). The trip was good practice for the real honeymoon.
